As a Director of Planning at Partners HealthCare International (PHI), Lori Matthews leads PHI healthcare and health sciences strategic planning and facility development initiatives and serves as client executive for projects. She advises PHI’s partners with an integrated approach to infrastructure development and implementation planning to transform their aspirations into the built environment.
Ms. Matthews is keenly interested in the development of healthcare and academic communities that are economically viable, environmentally sustainable and push the boundaries of local design to support international best practice in a culturally relevant manner. At the beginning of a collaboration, she works with PHI partners to define the initial project scope and implementation roadmap, including strategies for clinical program and academic programs, project team building, land development, and master planning. As the project evolves,Ms. Matthews collaborates with PHI’s partners and its design teams to translate programmatic and operational needs into all phases of the building process, including programming, detailed design development, equipment planning, construction and commissioning.
Ms. Matthews has advised PHI’s partners on the development of large-scale Greenfield developments and medical cities globally, including projects in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Libya, Pakistan, India, China, Chile, South Africa, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, Romania and the Dominican Republic. Ms. Matthews’ career has focused on guiding multi-disciplinary teams in the design of state-of-the-art diagnostic and inpatient care, ambulatory care, technologically advanced research facilities, and innovative health science education facilities. She has expansive knowledge in translating an institution’s aspirations and needs into flexible, patient-centered healing environments and dynamic learning and research environments. Her health care, academic and research projects have been nationally recognized, including the Center for Health Design/Contract Magazine health environment award, AIA and the Healthcare Care Assembly healthcare design awards and Modern Healthcare design awards.
An architect and master planner by profession, Ms. Matthews brings over 28 years of experience in healthcare, academic and research planning and design to her international work. Prior to joining PHI, she had a long career at Tsoi/Kobus and Associates (TK&A), where she provided leadership in design on many of the firm’s most challenging and technologically complex academic health center projects. Her clients included many of the most prestigious academic health centers in the U.S. today, including Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, University of Chicago Hospitals, University of Massachusetts Medical School, University of Pennsylvania Health Systems, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Medical College of Wisconsin, Children’s Hospital of Milwaukee, Lehigh Valley Hospital, MetroHealth Medical Center, and M. D. Andersen.
She is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Boston Society of Architects and is a LEED Accredited Professional,with a commitment to architectural mentoring as a thesis advisor and design critic. Ms. Matthews received her Master in Architecture degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Millersville University in Millersville, Pennsylvania.
